How To Fit Stair Rods & Clips

Stair rods are for decorative use only. For your safety, your carpet or stair runner must be secured by another means.

Please read the following instructions through carefully, together with our How To Measure Stair Rods guide, before ordering your stair rods.

Fitting Stair Rods In 3 Easy Steps

Even if you’re a DIY novice, you should have no trouble fitting Stair Rods yourself. First check what sort of brackets you’ll be using to fit your Stair Rods then simply follow the appropriate steps 1 to 3 below.

What You’ll Need

  • Bradawl (a hand tool for making guide holes)
  • Screw driver

Fitting Stair Rods With Hinged Runner Brackets

Important note before you begin: Each hinged bracket is part of an individual set. Tops and bottoms of your brackets cannot be interchanged with other bracket sets. For this reason we recommend that you are careful not to mix bracket components when preparing them for fitting.

When installing Stair Rods with a Stair Runner, the bracket should sit on the stair case itself, directly alongside your stair runner.

  1. Make bradawl guide holes for the screws for your first bracket, adjacent to your stair runner, then screw the bottom half of the bracket to the stair. Repeat for the bracket on the other side of your runner.
  2. Attach the finials to the stair rod and lay the stair rod in the brackets, ensuring it is protruding an equal amount on each end.
  3. Screw the top half of the bracket to the bottom on each side of your runner.

Repeat steps 1 to 3 until you’ve fitted all of your Stair Rods.

NB If you have a very wide Stair Runner or very narrow staircase, and there is not enough room between the edge of the runner and the skirting board or spindles for a bracket and finial, simply order front-fix brackets with your choice of stair rods and finials and follow the instructions below.

Fitting Stair Rods With Front-Fix Brackets

When installing Stair Rods with a fitted Stair Carpet, front-fix brackets should be fixed approximately 50mm-75mm (2"-3") inwards from the tip of the finial. Front fix brackets are fitted on top of your fitted carpet.

  1. Make bradawl guide holes for the screws for the brackets on each side of your first stair through your carpet.
  2. Before attaching the finials, slot your stair rod through both brackets and position the brackets over the guide holes, ensuring the rod is protruding an equal amount on each end
  3. Screw the brackets into place and attach the finials.

Repeat steps 1 to 3 until you’ve fitted all of your Stair Rods.

Fitting Stair Rods With Side-Fix Brackets

When installing Stair Rods with a fitted Stair Carpet, side fix brackets fit adjacent to your skirting board on each side of the stairs.

  1. Make bradawl guide holes for the screws for the brackets in the skirting board on each side of your first stair.
  2. Slot your stair rod through both brackets and position the brackets next to your skirting board, over the guide holes.
  3. Screw the brackets into place.

Repeat steps 1 to 3 until you’ve fitted all of your Stair Rods.

Fitting Stair Clips

These are purely decorative items which you simply screw to the stair riser behind the edge of your runner.
